According to the TomTom Congestion Index, Vancouver is the most congested city in Canada, and second most congested city in North America, falling behind Los Angeles.
The report finds that Friday mornings and Monday evenings are the best peak times to travel, while Wednesday owning and Tuesday evenings are the worst times to be stuck in traffic. The report which compares 26 major cities in Canada and the U.S. finds that the average driver is delayed by 34 minutes per hour during peak traffic periods. Making the average driver with a 30-munute commute be delayed 83 hours per year!
UBC professor of urban planning, population and public health, Larry Frank, believes that Vancouver is not the place to go if you’re looking to drive, as the way the city is set up is done so in a way that people have access to a wide range of transit options, such as bicycling, transit and by foot as options, not just cars. Having an environment where people can get physical activity while travelling, and generating less air pollution and gas house emissions, are reasons why Vancouver is always listed on the best-rated cities in the world index, according to Frank.
