Vancouver is getting its first regulation competition track and field facility, after Vancouver Park Board members unanimously approved plans.
The strategy looks specifically at creating a new facility at Vancouver Technical Secondary School. The eight-lane track will cost up to $7 million, complete with a jump area, spectator seating and a fieldhouse.
“In Vancouver there are increasing demands and growth pressures facing most sporting facilities,” states the proposal. “Although demand is widespread, the Park Board recognizes the urgent need for improved facilities that support people participating in track and field events, from casual to competitive running, jumping and throwing.”
There will also be work going into 14 existing facilities, including ones to Templeton Park and Kerrisdale Park.
There is consideration for a track and field facility at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School, but no details have been determined.
Working alongside Vancouver School Board, the plan will be implemented through a 10 year period.
