The council is calling on the province to launch a full public inquiry into money laundering.

City Council also wants funding immediately reinstated for the enforcement of organized crime, money laundering and illicit gambling.

As well, the City wants to see more training for provincial gaming services employees.

The Council would also like to work with the federal and provincial governments to develop “ a comprehensive organized crime policing plan that will establish key enforcement targets and outcomes.”

Other Council recommendations include:

  • a call for legislative reforms that will create transparency around beneficial ownership of corporations and land
  • a request that the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) place limits on casino purchases
  • a request that all Canadian banks be required to ensure that the name of the remitter be identified on all bank drafts.

The City is doing their part by putting forth amendments to Business Regulation Bylaw No. 7538 so that it includes criminal record checks as well as any other regulations for operators of money exchange businesses.

The City Council is timing their recommendations in a way so that their concerns can be documented in  the final reports that are being conducted by the BC Ministry of Attorney General and BC Ministry of Finance.
