$120-Million Plan Aims To Transform Playland Into World Class Theme Park

Playland will be undergoing some major changes with a massive expansion planned over the next decade.

Vancouver city council learned more about the 10-year plan on Tuesday. The redevelopment will include six new zones all with their own theme, similar to DisneyLand but without the Disney theme. Some of the themes discussed include: The Park, Fisherman’s Wharf and Forest Adventures.

The amusement park is currently 15-acres and will be around 22-acres once the expansion is completed. The goal is to transform the regional park into a world class theme park with softer landscapes, more green space, and added features that will serve a larger amount of people.

As mentioned in the city council meeting—Playland has the potential to become world class, which would in turn increase visits from both locals and tourists. These elements would support the local economy and increase job opportunities.

During the meeting, they presented council with two different ways to fund the expansion. The first would be to receive a city loan to cover the entire cost (which wouldn’t be repaid until 2040). The alternative plan is to receive a $90 million city loan and the remaining costs to come from the city’s Capital Plan. This plan would allow the loan to be repaid by 2034.

The $120 million cost is split up into $41 million towards site redevelopment, $26 million towards infrastructure renewal & upgrades, $8 million towards adding more green space, and $45 million towards new rides and attractions.

To add more green space to the area, they plan to add a park filled with lush trees, flower beds, as well as plenty of shaded areas and fountains to offer guests a relaxed space to enjoy a meal or take a break from all of the festivities.

There will be a wonderland for kids—giving them a space to play that is decorated with bright colours, shapes and provide them with lots of fun activities to engage in.

Adventure Land will be a theme that will offer a tree fort village with a wild river ride and an adventure ropes course.

The Coastal Village theme will be similar to a Fisherman’s Wharf with wood plank buildings and a central lagoon.
