What Should Surrey Do With The Vacant Building on 104?

While a vacant Surrey eye-sore was ripped down last week, another uninhabited building remains standing.

This building, however, is far from an eye-sore. In fact, the structure is visually appealing, with shining glass, warm orange bricks, and a lovely courtyard.

It seems like it should be easy for the owners to find occupants, but the building has sat empty for around 18 years.

The building, located between 141st and 142nd streets, was originally called the Asian Centre. It went through a series of owners, before it finally traded hands into most recent owner, Donald Pitt.

Owner Wants A Single Tenant For 104 Avenue Centre

Pitt is a lawyer from Arizona and the head of Nevada-based Wildcat Ventures. One of the major setbacks faces for renting the property is that he only wants a single tenant.

As Business Vancouver notes, “That is simply impossible, to sell or lease 300,000 square feet to one tenant in today’s commercial real estate market. Having a beautiful building sitting empty like this for so long does not make sense and certainly impacts our ability to attract businesses and jobs to Surrey. The owner needs to be open to more collaborative partnerships to ensure that the 104 centre is occupied and sustainable.”

The building has elicited a strong reaction from the community, and many people believe that the owner is being unreasonable. They think it is highly unlikely that a single owner will come forward, and that the owner is delaying the inevitable.

What would you like to see happen with the Surrey 104 Centre? Should it be torn down, multiple occupants chosen, leave it as it is, or is there a better option for the centre?
