The Surrey Public Market is being torn down after long years of abandonment.

The building has sat at the corner of King George Boulevard and 64th Ave for over two long decades without any occupation.

While numerous businesses applied for the building over the years, no one ever signed on. The last actual tenant for the property was the Surrey Public Market back in the 1990s.

After years of public outcry, city council finally began to take down the rotting structure. People had complained for years that it was a source of visual pollution, as it was completely dilapidated.

Surrey Residents Worry About Rodent Infestation

One of the biggest concerns with the building’s demolition is its large rat population. Since it has been empty for over two decades, the rats have moved in and populated the area.

Neighbouring residents are fearful of what may happen now that the structure is being torn down. They fear that the rats may vacate the premises and venture into their properties for shelter.

The Cloverdale Reporter notes that a developer plans to build 36 apartments and 40 town-homes where the market once stood. They also mention that the developer ensured that there would be an exterminator on site to take care of the impending rat issue.

The majority of residents in the area are thrilled that the land is being developed and claim that they will celebrate once the area is cleaned up.

Surrey also may be the chosen location for the a $150 Million Dollar Waterpark & Hotel.
