On Tuesday, September 3rd, kids will be going back to school and that means school speed zones are back in effect.
The RCMP is reminding drivers that school zone speed limits are 30 km/h from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.
“It is illegal for a vehicle travelling in the same or opposite direction as a stopped school bus to pass when its red lights are flashing”, reads a statement by police.
In addition, vehicles may not pass until the flashing red lights are turned off and the stop signal arm is down.
To ensure drivers are sticking to the speed limit in these zones, extra officers will be out patrolling the roads.
With this in mind, here’s some tips parents should go over with their children to ensure they stay safe:
Do:
- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the road
- Stay alert until you have safely reached the other side of the road
- Wear bright coloured clothing in the evening so you can be seen by motorists
- Stop and look left –right-left around parked vehicles
Don’t:
- Assume you have the right of way as a pedestrian
- Become distracted with texting or listening to loud music on headphones when walking
- Take shortcuts through parking lots
- Accept rides from strangers
