With just a year to go until the FIFA World Cup 2026, Vancouver’s preparations for the premiere soccer event is in full-swing. But celebrations were in order for this milestone date, and so the city hosted One Year To Go, an event that celebrated everything Vancouver and soccer.
There were activities, an unveiling, and even some prizes that you can still win!
ONLY A YEAR TO GO
It seems like not so long ago when it was first announced that Vancouver would be hosting 7 matches for the FIFA World Cup. Now that we’re at the one-year-to-go mark, the city is lighting up with celebrations.
On June 11, the Terry Fox Plaza saw crowds gather as Vancouver’s official Host City Countdown Clock was unveiled at the One Year To Go event. The clock will be counting down the days until the tournament kicks off. It’s the perfect place for a selfie, and everyone is encouraged to tag their pics with #WeAreVancouver to show your city spirit.

In addition, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim also announced that Friday, June 13 is Soccer Day in Vancouver to honour the sport’s community within the city.
GIVEAWAYS
There were a couple more celebrations that joined the Countdown Clock’s unveiling, such as youth players participating in mini-pitch matches organized by coaches Christine Sinclair and Tosaint Ricketts. Landmarks in Vancouver and around the country were also slated light up in Canada’s colours to mark One Year to Go.

But that’s not all. For those interested, you have the chance to win some merchandise throughout June. The city has partnered with BC Soccer and local soccer clubs to give away some FIFA World Cup merch.
You have the chance to win one of five prize packs. Although what specifically is inside these prize packs has yet to be announced, they do include “official gear.”
With the FIFA World Cup just a year away, now’s the perfect time to get hyped. Tickets are also planned to go on sale later this year, so stay tuned for when the dates officially drop.
