Most billboards you see on B.C. highways are massive still images, but the McDonald’s billboard on Highway 99 in Squamish is helping reinvent billboard advertising.
Taking full advantage of Whistler’s busiest season, the ad uses real-time snowfall data and automatically adjusts the levels of whip cream in centimetres on the restaurant’s McCafe drinks. The level of whip cream reflects the centimeters of snow at Whistler’s Blackcomb resort, making it a joyful update for skiers and snowboarders heading up to the mountain.
McDonald’s takes full advantage of the attention, and subs in a new drink’s image every day including the McCafé Latte, McCafé Cappuccino and McCafé Deluxe Hot Chocolate.
Vancouver marketing and communications agency Cossette is the brains behind the advertising, and ran a similar campaign on the same billboard last month with an Egg McMuffin.
Cossette was also behind McDonald’s giving away free McFlurry’s in Vancouver last summer.
