The Cold Moon supermoon is coming soon, setting the scene for winter’s longer nights and chillier days. It will be shining overhead B.C. this December, and will give folks the chance to catch it high in the sky for some amazingly glowy pictures.

Save the date and mark your calendars because this is the final supermoon of the year!

A Long History

The Cold Moon has centuries of history behind its many names. Its most common name– the Cold Moon– comes from the Mohawk, which demonstrates the cold season in which it rises. The Mohican also call it the Long Night Moon since it appears during the longest nights of the year, close to the winter solstice.

There are a wide range of other Indigenous names that the Cold Moon has gained throughout history, as well as European traditions that called it the “Moon Before Yule”. Now, B.C. residents will have the chance to witness the Cold Moon this December as it shines on a cold winter night.

The Cold Moon In B.C.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the best time to watch the moon is just after moonrise. This is when the moon appears larger on the horizon, a phenomenon known as the “Moon illusion.” It’s also important for the skies to be clear with minimal light pollution in order to see the moon even greater.

Supermoons are generally slightly larger and brighter than your typical full moon, specifically around 8% larger in diameter and 16% brighter.

When Will The Supermoon Rise?

You can expect the Cold Moon to rise on December 4, 2025. This marks it as the final supermoon of 2025, and the third of a series of consecutive supermoons that appeared in October and November.
