Car2Go To Drop Service In Richmond & Cut Back In North Van

Upon expanding to Richmond in 2014, low demand has forced Car2Go to discontinue its services beginning February 1, 2016.

The company broke the news through an e-mail statement, explaining that long idle times for most vehicles in the city led to the decision.

“In the time car2go has been operating in Richmond, we’ve seen that vehicles sit idle for over 13 hours a day,” reads the e-mail. “This is a stark contrast to the vehicles in the Vancouver Home Area, which move frequently, ensuring that our vehicles are in constant circulation, rather than occupying limited parking spaces.”

Three locations in Richmond will continue to remain active in the Car2Go Home area however; Kwantlen Polytechnic University, YVR, and Mitchell Island Sports Centre.

Car2Go adds that it will be also be reducing service in North Vancouver by a half square-kilometre in the west portion of the city’s Home area. This reduction also comes into effect on February 1, 2016.

“This will allow us to concentrate the vehicles within the Vancouver Home Area for a more robust car2go network, allowing members to find a vehicle more easily when they need to get from Point A to Point B,”
