B.C. Is Getting A Fifth Area Code Next Year

Area Code

Some people may recall when the “604” area code was first introduced in the lower mainland; however, there aren’t enough of those old codes to go around anymore.

A new code is needed for the province because the ones are expected to be filled with telephone numbers by April 2021.

Starting in May 2019, British Columbia will also have a 672 area code. Currently, there are four: 604, 778, 250 and 236.

A New BC Area Code

Just like 236 and 778, the new code will cover the entire province.

Code 236 was the last code introduced in the province, arriving in 2013. Prior to that, the government introduced 10 digit dialling and the 778 area code in 2001.

The government assures that introducing the one next year will allow phone companies enough time to introduce it before the numbers run out.
