As a heat wave continues to sizzle throughout the province, coastal BC temperatures are breaking numerous records.

In fact, a Google Alert issued on Tuesday, June 19th, states that temperatures reaching 35°C are expected. Further, it adds that these temperatures are about 10 degrees above averages for the middle of June.

Yesterday, the Lower Mainland reached a toasty high of 32°C inland. The hot weather is expected to continue through Thursday. At that time, some cooling is expected as the ridge of high pressure begins to break down.

The province’s soaring temperatures are even hotter than those in some major American hotspots.

For example, the highest temperature in sunny Los Angeles is 28°C degrees, while the hottest in Miami is 33°C.

  • Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.
  • Seek a cool place such as a tree-shaded area, swimming pool, shower or bath, or air-conditioned spot like a public building.
  • Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
  • Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool place.

Environment Canada and the Lower Mainland Medical Health Officers expect an increase in health and safety risks from heat and are advising the public to take precautions.
