October may have recorded only 32% of its monthly rainfall average, but November is here to change that. This week, an atmospheric river is expected to sweep through B.C., bringing major downpours across the region, including Vancouver.

Atmospheric rivers are defined by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as “relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere– like rivers in the sky– that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics.” They generally create extreme rainfall and floods as they stall over watersheds that are vulnerable to flooding.

According to the Weather Network, a cold front is forecasted to move over B.C.’s South Coast on Wednesday evening and overnight. Later on Thursday, coastal winds will climb to 40-60km/h, eventually reaching 70km/h over the weekend.

The heavy, persistent rain is expected to begin on Friday and last through the weekend, with the atmospheric river’s greatest impacts arriving on late Saturday into Sunday. 50-80mm of rainfall is expected.

Environment Canada’s Vancouver weather predictions look similar, with nonstop showers from Friday that run through the weekend. Temperatures are expected to hit highs of 13°C on Friday, and overnight lows of 6°C on Sunday.
