The challenge for Uber running shop in the 604 just got worse.

For those who don’t know, Uber is a ridesharing service that allows consumers to connect with drivers of vehicles for hire through an app. You can use the app to request rides and track the reserved vehicles location. The service has been a hit in different parts of North America including Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa.

British Columbia Transportation Minister Todd Stone has announced that the Province will use undercover agents in plainclothes to enforce existing taxi-licensing laws and hand out fines up to $5,000 for operators of unlicensed taxi vehicles.

The announcement comes as a reaction to hints of an expected launch of the new transportation service in Vancouver. Uber has placed several job postings on their website in search for managers and drivers.

“We will have dozens of undercover enforcement officers who will be at the ready to ensure that anyone who is providing a taxi-like service is doing so with a proper license,” said Stone
