THE B.C. TESLA EXPLOSION
TSBC is responsible for overseeing a number of installation and operation systems in B.C., which are subject to certain rules and safety guidelines. Things like electrical, gas, boilers, and pressure vessels all fall under their jurisdiction, among many other things.
In the description of the YouTube video, TSBC writes that the “explosion occurred at EV charger when the owner attempted to charge their Tesla EV using an uncertified adapter. The adapter was meant to allow the use of a common ‘CCS’ charger into the ‘NACS’ charging post of a Tesla EV.” The incident occurred in Hope, B.C on August 16, 2024.
According to the Incident Summary, the injury rating is categorized as “insignificant” with only minor scrapes and bruises to the driver. On the other hand, the damage rating is considered “major” with “arc flash burn marks to the vehicle [and] complete destruction of the electric vehicle charger adaptor.”
REVISED REPORTS
Although both the Incident Summary and YouTube description describe the issue being with the third-party adapter, it has since been concluded on October 9, 2025 as not the adapter’s fault.
“A short circuit in a battery module occurred in the charger resulting in abnormal voltage being sent through the charger adapter,” notes the report. “Subsequently the charger adapter experienced an internal arc fault and explosion which damaged the adapter and vehicle.”
In fact, the driver had used the adapter 50 times without any incident. Although it was an uncertified adapter, it had not been the ultimate cause.
In the end, it was due to the charger– not the adapter– that resulted in the explosion. Either way, the video serves as a lesson to be careful with which charging stations you plug your EV into. To learn more about this B.C. Tesla explosion, you can check the full Incident Summary here.
