For a second straight year in a row, Whistler has cut more power consumption than any other community in British Columbia during Earth Hour (8:30pm – 9:30pm) on Saturday, March, 28.

During the hour without light, Whistler held a candlelight skate at Whistler Olympic Plaza. The Fairmont Chateau in Whistler also hosted ‘People Power Productions’, in which participants peddled a bike to blend smoothies.

Top 5 Earth Hour communities in the province:

  • Whistler – reduced its electricity load by 7.2%
  • Invermere – reduced its electricity load by 6.7%
  • Clearwater – reduced its electricity load by 4%
  • Houston – reduced its electricity load by 3.9%
  • Logan Lake – reduced its electricity load by 3.2%

*Vancouver’s reduction was .7%.

British Columbia cities with the smallest reduction were Fort Nelson, Courtenay and Comox, who reduced their electricity load by a mere 0.1%.

Overall, British Columbians saved a combined total of 15 megawatt hours of electricity and helped reduce the provincial electricity load by 0.2%, which is down 77% from 2014 when British Columbians saved 136 megawatt hours.

Earth Hour began in 2007 and originates from Sydney, Australia. The initiative encourages people to turn off their lights and electronics for one hour in an effort to save energy consumption.
