Take a dip into the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean and Georgia Straight without getting wet by joining two robots sharing their underwater journey live through a web stream.
Hercules and Jason, two remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are currently live streaming their journey to eight underwater observatories in B.C, which they began on August 25.
The University of Victoria’s Ocean Networks Canada is leading the 24-hour a day, three-week mission in hopes of discovering new species, mapping the ocean floor, and upgrading the high-tech undersea sensors. Those watching this year’s mission will be able to see “Canada’s busiest coastal waterway” and marine environments up to 3 kilometres below sea level.
Sights expected to surface on the live stream include multi-storey chimneys spewing black superheated seawater, jellyfish, whales, and possibly new species that have yet to be identified.
In addition, Hercules and Jason will also drop two fresh pig carcasses in the Straight and record the decomposition – research that may potentially be useful for investigators when bodies are pulled from the ocean.
