While it made the top twenty, Vancouver fell a number of spots on this year’s list of the most reputable cities worldwide. In fact, last year the coastal city ranked fifth; this year it landed in sixteenth.

City RepTrak is a global survey that uses 22,000 ratings from the general public in the G8 countries. It ranks the world’s 55 most reputable cities based on levels of trust, esteem, admiration, and respect.

“This year’s pivotal switch between beauty and safety as the most important attribute is a sign of the current socio-political landscape shaping cities,” said Oliver Freedman, Managing Director at Reputation Institute.

“City reputation is comprised of more than just fiscal growth. Underlying feelings of geopolitical tension, nationalism and social unrest contribute to city reputation.”

Interestingly, two Canadian cities beat out Vancouver this year, including Montreal and Toronto. Montreal came in tenth, while Toronto nabbed the thirteenth spot.

This year, Tokyo climbed eleven spots to claim first place. Sydney came in second, with Copenhagen in third. As such, the list points to which cities are successfully managing their reputation and how that has changed over time.

Rounding out the top six cities were Vienna, Stockholm and Venice. In total, they collectively comprise six cities with excellent reputations. Last year, only two cities were bestowed this accolade.

Aside from Tokyo and Montreal, each of the top ten cities is European.

Vancouver was recently named one of the top five most filmed cities in the world, as well as one of the top ten most liveable.
