The total lunar eclipse, which occurs less than once per year on average, took place at the same time as a supermoon. This means that the moon was near perigee – its closest distance to Earth.

People across BC made sure to get out and catch a view of its captivating appearance.

Here are some of the best photos posted to social media.

"The Super Blood Wolf Moon" 🐺 • There it is, the second historical lunar event in a little under a year. It doesn't feel that long ago that I was capturing the Super Blue Blood Moon of 2018 at 5am in the morning. Pretty incredible to be able to witness this yet again less than a year later. I hope that all of you with good weather were able to enjoy this beautiful moon tonight. It sure was an incredible sight. 📸 • • • • • Tags: #superbloodwolfmoon #superbloodwolfmooneclipse2019 #superbloodmoon #lunareclipse2019 #awesomeearth #artofvisuals #theimaged #moodygrams #ig_shotz #lensbible #beautifuldestinations #earthpix #wildlifeplanet #natgeocreative #earthfocus #gearednomad #createcommune #lookatthosecolours #heatercentral #eclectic_shotz #gramslayers #doyoutravel #shotzdelight #sonyalpha #ig_thisworld #ig_color #createandexplore #visualambassadors

20/365: A composite image from yesterday’s Lunar Eclipse over Vancouver. Last night, I set off to capture the first Lunar Eclipse of 2019, also known as the “Super Blood Wolf Moon”. The name comes from three factors; It’s the year’s first full moon (wolf moon), the moon is at its closest distance to the earth (super moon), and a total lunar eclipse (blood moon). This rare occurrence will only happy once more this century. Knowing this would be a great subject for my photo of the day, I set off to Cypress Lookout for an amazing view of the city and the to take in the show. Along with a number of photographers, we watched photographed, and howled at the total eclipse. Unfortunately, the moon didn’t quite line up with the city and the view I imagined.. so I’ve taken some creative liberty in this photo to commemorate the moment. It was certainly a memorable night. #explorebc
