Record Music For Free At Vancouver Public Library’s New Inspiration Lab

Record Music For Free At Vancouver Public Library's New Inspiration Lab

The Vancouver Public Library’s central downtown branch has revealed a new state of the art “Inspiration Lab” to allow aspiring music artists free studio recording time.

The lab is metro Vancouver’s first free recording studio and can be accessed by anyone who possess a library card. The $600,000 lab covers 7,500 square-feet and offers four sound studios and one recording studio equipped with a control room. It also provides video production editing, and self-publishing software.

The project is funded by the Library, City of Vancouver, and fundraising. The project is apart of the city’s initiative on making digital services more accessible to residents. This also includes adding 43 free public Wi-Fi locations throughout Vancouver this summer.

“With the launch of the new Inspiration Lab, the Vancouver Public Library is continuing its leadership with innovation, storytelling, and support for local creative people” says Mayor Gregor Robertson. “Whether it’s with music, video, or digital media, the VPL Inspiration Lab will now be one of Vancouver’s most exciting creative hubs – and City Hall is thrilled to be supporting it!”

The average price of renting a private recording studio in Vancouver is between $30 – $65 per hour – more than most people can afford given you need a few hours during each recording session. The public will be able to book the library’s recording studio online in one-hour slots for up to three hours per day – free. Library staff will also be available to help users with the digital tools.

It’s always nice to see the city introducing new initiatives and supporting Vancouver’s local music scene.
