On Friday, June 7th, it was announced that a new year-round homeless shelter is going to open up in Burnaby.
Located at 2294 Douglas Rd. in the southern Brentwood area, the temporary shelter is slated to open by the end of summer 2019.
Its purpose will be to give support and hope to people experiencing homelessness in the community. Once the shelter is fully open, it’ll house up to 40 beds.
Year-Round Homeless Shelter
The year-round homeless shelter’s day-to-day operations will be managed by the Progressive Housing Society, a local non-profit.
A minimum of two staff will be on site 24/7 and the society’s outreach team will also be located at the shelter. Furthermore, staff from Fraser Health will be onsite regularly for any additional support.
As for intake requests, they will happen during the day and visitors are not allowed onsite.
BC Housing will enter into a three-year lease for the site. The site is already zoned appropriately, so there is no municipal process required.
The Province will provide annual operating funding to the Progressive Housing Society to manage the shelter.
If you’d like to learn more about this project, BC Housing will host community dialogue sessions in June for the public to attend.
