New Laws And Policies Coming To Canada This November

Buying Canadian

The country’s already been very vocal about buying locally, but it’s now official that the federal government will be focusing on purchasing from Canadian suppliers. The Buy Canadian Policy will be introducing new measures to ensure that Canadian suppliers are prioritized in all federal spending.

Titled Policy on Prioritizing Canadian Materials in Federal Procurement, the Government will “require domestic and foreign supplies contracting with the federal government to source key materials from Canadian companies in defence and construction procurements exceeding a certain threshold.”

This will initially cover Canadian steel and softwood lumber. Over the next months, additional domestic materials will be included in the policy.

Drone Regulations

Got a drone? Some big changes are coming to their regulation– specifically in two phases so that drone operators have time to adjust to them. This includes procuring proper training and certification.

As of November 4, drone operators can fly Beyond Visual Line-of-Sight (BVLOS), Extended Visual Line-of-Sight, and Sheltered operations with a Pilot Certificate – Advanced Operations. You can also take the new Level 1 Complex exam and apply for an RPAS Operator Certificate through the Drone Management Portal, which has been available since April 1, 2025.

For lower-risk BVLOS, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Pass the online exam for advanced and Level 1 Complex Operations
  • Complete at least 20 hours of ground school and successfully pass a flight review

Lower-risk BVLOS must also “remain in uncontrolled airspace, stay below 122 metres (400 feet), [and] stay away from airports and aerodromes.” Moreover, you may operate at least 1 km away from a populated area when flying a small or medium drone.

Job Searches and National Online Training Platform

The Government is putting in $50 million over the next five years to modernize its online job tools.

“This funding will make it easier for users to find jobs by integrating AI on the Job Bank platform,” says the news release. “This investment will also launch a national online training platform to help adults find short-duration training courses by skill type, location, and format.”

Working in partnership with the Government are companies like Indeed, Zip Recruiter, Jobilico, and Career Beacon. By the end of November, you can expect the following additional improvements to the Government’s online platform:

  • Customized referrals for workers and employers to local employment support organizations that can provide in-person services.
  • A new feedback mechanism that will give a worker feedback on their skills gaps from employers within 30 days of submitting a job application, which will support workers’ training decisions and increase their chances of success in the future.
  • All jobs in Job Bank will include a salary, and if the employer uses AI in the job selection process, this information will be available on the job posting.
  • A new Worker Dashboard will show registered job seekers at the local level to help employers find workers with the right skills.
