- Taking you dog out on your run? If so, try to do so at cooler times during the day, as the pavement could potentially be very hot and burn your good boy’s paws;
- If you’re going to be spending a lot of time under the sun with your dog, bring something that you can use to create some shade for her;
- Giving your dog a haircut might seem like a simple solution, but that could actually have the opposite effect, as your dog’s hair protects her from the sun. Instead, you can wipe her down a cool towel!
- Do you freeze your snacks to munch on when it gets unbearably hot? You can do the same with dog treats!
- If your dog’s accompanying you on a drive, rolling down a window may not be enough. A hot car, even with a window rolled down, can potentially harm your dog. The SPCA notes that the kindest thing you can do for him/her, and to avoid the possibility of being fined, is to leave them at home!
- Be aware that some dogs are less heat-tolerant than others. Veterinarians and animal-welfare experts note that dogs that are older, or are short-nosed are generally less heat-tolerant.
Enjoy the summer!
