FreshCo is officially expanding into British Columbia.

However, it’ll be under a new name: FreshCo.

A number of FreshCo stores will begin opening across BC this spring.

FreshCo is a Canadian discount supermarket chain owned by Empire Company Limited. It was launched in March 2010.

In December 2017, Empire announced plans to rebrand up to 64 stores in Western Canada currently under the Safeway and Sobeys names into the FreshCo banner.

“The first five Western Canada FreshCo stores are expected to open in the Spring of 2019 – three in B.C. and two in Manitoba” reads a statement.

“An additional seven stores are expected to open in B.C. in the first half of fiscal 2020, depending on timing of construction schedules and permits. In addition to five stores previously closed, the Company will close a further five stores in the first half of fiscal 2020 to begin construction” continues the statement.

The 10 B.C. FreshCo store locations confirmed to date are:

  • Abbotsford
  • Aldergrove
  • Downtown Chilliwack
  • Ladner
  • Maple Ridge
  • Mission
  • Broadmoor and Blundell in Richmond
  • Strawberry Hills and Newton in Surrey

The Union has appealed certain elements of the decision, but the Company intends to move forward and implement the move.
