Douglas College Expanding Campus In New Westminster

The New Westminster campus of Douglas College is embarking on its largest renovation since being opened back in 1982.

Over 32,000 square feet will be renovated including upgrades to educational spaces, new classrooms and additional lab space. Existing classroom upgrades are also a big part of the project to provide energy efficient lighting, better HVAC systems and audio-visual technology. Construction runs from February through August.

The college has seen a growing student population through its 2010-2015 Strategic Plan which saw the expansion of academic programs and 1400 new domestic full time student spots throughout its campuses.

The school has also furthered its internationalization by partnering with India and Panama to bring more international students to British Columbia. This led to an international student expansion of 107% or 650 spots over the period.

Similarly, Kwantlen Polytechnic University is undergoing its own expansion in the downtown core of Surrey. The KPU Civic Plaza will add 30,000 square feet of educational space as a satellite campus in Surrey’s City Center. KPU will occupy three floors at 3 Civic Plaza, a new 52-storey multi-use building slated to open late 2016. It will also house a hotel, condos and office space.
