What To Do If You Don’t Have Time To Read a Classic

Most people nowadays may not want to sit and spend the time reading a book that was written over a hundred years ago. Nowadays, it’s also not that hard to find someone who has taken the plot of that book and has loosely based it into the ‘modern’ world. So, here’s a list of some classical novels that have been modernized.

Clueless

This 1995 film is loosely based off Jane Austen’s novel Emma. Alicia Silverstone plays Cher Horowitz, a modernized version of the matchmaking Emma Woodhouse, in this version of the story set in Beverly Hills, California.

10 Things I Hate About You

This 1999 film is the modernization of Shakespeare’s play The Taming of the Shrew. Julia Stiles plays the female lead and Heath Ledger plays the male lead in this version of Shakespeare’s tale.

She’s the Man

Another film to take inspiration from Shakespeare is “She’s the Man.” This 2006 film is loosely based on Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night. The film stars Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum as the female and male leads of the film.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries

“The Lizzie Bennet Diaries” is not a film, but a modern vlog-style version of Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice. There are 100 episodes that average at around five minutes to tell the classic tale of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy.

Emma Approved

Similar to The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Emma Approved is another modern vlog-style version of Jane Austen’s novel Emma. Unlike “Clueless,” “Emma Approved” has the same plot and characters of Emma.

Frankenstein, M.D.

This is another vlog-style recreation of a classic novel. Frankenstein, M.D. is a modern version of Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein.
