There’s nothing like a winter getaway, but you may want to be choosy about where you’re heading to this season. Canada has just issued a number of new travel advisories for an array of popular vacation destinations, including Mexico.
Canada Travel Advisories
The Government of Canada splits its travel advisories into four distinct levels. At the lowest is for travellers to take normal precautions. This means you should exercise standard travelling practices. As the advisories get more serious, they go from using a high degree of caution to avoiding all travel.
Although there are plenty of places that are in the green on Canada’s travel advisory list, these are some spots you may want to avoid until further notice. Still, it’s good to remember that unless a country is advised as only essential travel or no travel, you can go there regardless. It’s just suggested that you exercise more caution than usual, as the country may be experiencing a number of issues that pose a risk to travellers.

Below, you can find a list of popular travel destinations that are currently under a travel advisory.
Popular Countries Under A Travel Advisory
- Italy: Exercise a high degree of caution
- Costa Rica: Exercise a high degree of caution
- Colombia: Exercise a high degree of caution (with regional advisories)
- Mexico: Exercise a high degree of caution (with regional advisories)
- Thailand: Exercise a high degree of caution (with regional advisories)
Many of these countries are under a travel advisory due to things like criminal activity, including theft, gang violence, assault, and fraud, among others. Places like Italy may experience threats of terrorism due to the Milan Cortina Olympic Winter Games, as well as the Paralympic Winter Games, which are events that summon large crowds and potential thieves and pickpockets, as well as other criminals.
Thailand is also experiencing ongoing political tensions and sporadic demonstrations in Bangkok and elsewhere in the country. There are also regional risks, such as the Thailand-Cambodia border, that travellers should avoid at all costs due to further tensions.
