It has been two weeks since the SPCA was called on the owners of a dog and animal control was dispatched to the parking lot of a Burnaby Costco. Tied to the back of an SUV in the hot sun, this dog was left panting and without water for over an hour. The owners have since been issued bylaw fines, totaling $300.

These owners have been spotted in two different instances doing this. Same car, same Costco, and the same dog suffering in the heat.

One of the owners has recently released a statement in regards to her actions.

STATEMENTS

The owner has made a post on RedNote, a Chinese localised version of Instagram, addressing people’s concerns about her dog. Originally written in Chinese, this English translation provides some insight as to why the owner did what she did.

The title of her first post reads: “My Akita Was Left in the Car While I Shopped at Costco – Here’s My Side of the Story.”

The statement goes on to detail the owner’s dog, which is an Akita Inu. She states that they are “a breed known for its loyalty and attachment to its owner.” As the owner is not working and has no other life obligations, she takes the dog wherever she goes “instead of leaving it home alone.”

Part of the post notes how the dog was left in a “well-ventilated spot in the back of the car, not exposed to direct sunlight, and not locked in a sealed space.” Furthermore, she clarifies that the day’s temperature “was less than 20 degrees Celsius, and the most suitable activity temperature for Akitas is between 10 to 20 degrees.”

This is in contrast to footage of the dog panting, without water, and generally appearing uncomfortable.

“A CALL FOR RATIONAL DISCUSSION”

Her second and third posts go into further detail about how the owner feels she has been misrepresented on the Internet. Much of it discusses how well her dog is doing, and that this backlash has been placed unfairly upon her friend. Who, the owner says, was an innocent bystander who the owner has since monetarily compensated.

The final section of her third post notes that she made her “‘FU money’” young. She says that “I don’t need to worry about work or have many troubles in life.” Further, she tells everyone that “if you always speak harshly to others and hold jealousy in your heart, life won’t treat you kindly either.”

The post finishes with a final statement, as the owner tells everyone, “thank you all for your ‘concern’.”

A GENUINE APOLOGY?

On a Reddit thread, many note the insincerity of the owner’s statement. Reddit users have been quick to point out how the posts include a number of irrelevant information, such as the owner’s “FU money.” Her explanation seems to not have satisfied many animal defenders, nor internet-goers.

Users have also noted how the posts made no mention of a direct apology– only defenses and explanations.
