There’s been a lot of notable changes in local transportation this year. Translink introduced pay by ‘credit-card tap’, YVR approved cannabis friendly smoking areas, and BC Ferries is finally accepting debit card payments aboard sailings.
Up until now, the lack of debit payments has long frustrated passengers who were forced to use cash or credit cards. According to BC Ferries, debit has never been an option as there was no way to access real time connectivity through Active Pass.
Credit cards however provided digital storage and delayed transmission of purchase information.

It appears the debit technology BC Ferries has been waiting for has arrived.
As a result, the company has launched a new pilot program on all five vessels servicing the Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay route.

The company will eventually expand the service and offer it on other vessels, and to walk-on passenger ticket sales.
With that being said, the boarding kiosks for vehicle drivers will still be restricted to cash or credit card. There’s currently no timeline for when that will change.
