As of today, January 22, 2018, commuters are officially prohibited from smoking on the outdoor decks of BC Ferries or at any of their terminals.
While smoking within ferries was banned in 1990, completely banning them came with obvious pushback. As a result, the move took some time to accomplish, but now all of the facilities are completely smoke free.
“The policy aligns with other transportation services and ensures everyone using our services can breathe smoke-free air,” said President Mark Collins.

BC Ferries Smoking Ban
The new smoke-free policy applies to tobacco and any other substance including e-cigarettes, and is expected to reduce the number of complaints BC Ferries receives from customers related to second-hand smoke.
CBC News spoke to Deborah Marshall, a BC Ferries spokesperson who told them, “It may be challenging for some customers and employees…but 85 per cent of British Columbians don’t smoke and those customers are asking us to go smoke-free.”
The ban also includes all marijuana products.
