While it isn’t coming into effect straight away, BC Ferries is introducing seasonal discounts and adding additional flexibility to tickets.

BC Ferries CEO, Mike Collins, said that the plan will ensure that customers may change their travel plans on select routes in a way that most suits their needs.

Some customers may prefer to pay the lowest price possible, while others may desire to have greater flexibility in travel.

For example, more expensive tickets will allow travellers to change their reservation up to 20 minutes prior to sailing. Also, a new app will allow passengers to see delays in order to make these decisions closer to sailing time.

BC Ferries Introduces New Reservation System

The flexible fares will be rolled out over the next 18 months, but the new reservation system may be up and running as soon as November; however, the new fare rates would only apply to major routes.

In addition, the NDP government has committed to dropping some fares by April 1st; they have been frozen for the past two years.

Fares are set to drop as much as 15 percent on smaller routes, and change less on major routes.

BC Ferries also recently banned smoking on all decks as well as in ferry terminals.
