Health Canada has issued a product advisory for a toy sold at Walmart as it may pose a “chemical hazard” to users. Consumers are asked to “immediately stop using the affected product.”

Walmart Toy Product Advisory
According to the notice, the affected products are balloon blowing kits, which consist of a solvent mixture in a tube and short plastic straws for blowing.
“Children can form balloons or bubbles by slowly squeezing out a ball of the mixture from the tube and sticking it on the end of the straw. The child then blows through the straw to create a bubble.”
In Canada, children’s balloon blowing kits containing solvents are banned. The notice explains that these kits can expose children to vapours in the solvents through inhalation. By blowing this type of solvent for extended periods, children may experience “early symptoms of nervous system depression or dysfunction.” These symptoms include euphoria, hallucinations, dizziness, and difficulties with coordination of voluntary movements.
More serious symptoms like muscular twitching, unconsciousness and coma can occur from prolonged exposure.
What to Do
Consumers with the affected products are asked to immediately stop using them. You may safely expose of the items according to municipal hazardous waste guidelines.
