Balloon Ban Might Be Instated In All Vancouver Parks This Fall

Balloon Ban

The Vancouver Park Board is seriously considering banning latex and plastic balloons from all of its city parks and recreation centres.

Green Party Park Board Commissioner Stuart MacKinnon says that balloons cause extensive damage to the environment and wildlife.

Animals often eat discarded, deflated balloons that are left behind after parties, gatherings or just casual strolls.

The motion states that animals are naturally curious about balloons. The bright colours intrigue them, and so they end up eating or playing with them. It adds that, “Flippers and fins of sea turtles, seals, and dolphins can also become wrapped in string causing infections, amputations or death by drowning.”

While fun to look at, balloons clog landfills because they are not renewable. They also cause 30 power power outages in the province every year.

The motion remarks that they are the leading cause of childhood death from toys.

The Vancouver Park Board will vote on Monday, September 18th on the prohibition of balloons in city parks and recreation centres.
