In the city’s fourth climate strike held Friday, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg lead the rally at Vancouver Art Gallery.
The event brought together more than 10,000 protesters who listened carefully to the words of 16-year-old Thunberg.

“It is shameful that for so long the ongoing climate and ecological emergency has been ignored,” she said. “It is the year 2019 and the people in power are still acting as if there was no tomorrow. We young people are telling them to stop doing that — to stop ignoring the consequences of their actions and inactions, to stop leaving their mess for someone else to clean up because we do not want to do it for them.”
Thunberg stood in front of the crowd, surrounded by indigenous leaders. Severn Cullis-Suzuki, daughter of David Suzuki, also stood at her side.

Thunberg held up her sign in Swedish, stating, “School strike for climate.”
Thunberg’s Speech on Climate Change
After the march, Thunberg began her speech by acknowledging that she stood on the unceded territories of the Coast Salish people.
She then spoke about the young Canadians who are suing the federal government for not doing enough on climate change. She called them brave and said these actions would put pressure on the government to commit to change.
The 16-year-old added that if adults really loved young people, they would commit to ensuring a better future for them.
“But it feels like they are doing the exact opposite — that they are desperately trying to change the subject every time the climate crisis comes up,” she said.
