A teenaged hiker died on Wednesday, June 28th after falling down a waterfall on a trail near Buntzen Lake.
The 16-year-old teen was hiking with a friend when the pair got lost on Eagle Ridge. Coquitlam Search and Rescue conducted a helicopter search of the area in order to locate the teens; however, the young teen was already deceased when they arrived.
According to CBC News, both hikers fell during the incident. Luckily, the hiker that survived was able to use his cell phone to contact the search team. He was stranded on a slippery rock face underneath the waterfall, and may have also perished if he wasn’t located.
We can confirm that tonight’s rescue was a party of two hikers who got lost on Eagle Ridge. While descending a steep gulley one of the two fell, and died at the scene.
Rescuers transported both out of the field via long line.
Our condolences to family & friends of the deceased

Teenaged Hiker Tragedy
North of Port Moody, Buntzen Lake is a popular destination for hikers. With that being said, the area has extremely poor cell reception.
In fact, it is difficult to even get reception in the parking lot outside of the trails. As a result, the search team believes that having better reception would enable more successful rescues in the future.
