Themes of time and memory inspire Mozongi, a spellbinding contemporary African dance work created by internationally-acclaimed Montreal choreographer Zab Maboungou. Mozongi (‘return’) is performed by a dynamic ensemble of five dancers and two percussionists. Maboungou is renowned as one of Canada’s most influential and significant choreographers: her unique approach is fiercely contemporary but deeply rooted in traditional African sources, and she constructs a potent poetic power from movement, bodies and rhythms. Regarded as one of her seminal works, Mozongi’s electrifying dancing and drumming radiate energy and purpose, and the piece emanates wisdom, heart and spirit.
