Whitecaps Clinch Playoff Spot With Impressive Win In Kansas City

The Whitecaps are going to the playoffs.

Vancouver (15W-10L-6D) got a 1-0 road win against Sporting Kansas City to officially clinch a berth in the 2017 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.

It’s the third time in four years that Vancouver has made it to the playoffs.

“A massive win on the road,” said Whitecaps Forward Erik Hortado. He scored the game’s only goal with a fantastic volley in the 53rd minute.

The game also marked Vancouver’s first ever victory at Children’s Mercy Park in MLS play and it ended Sporting’s home unbeaten run at 24 matches.

Both teams fought and scrapped throughout the entire game, leaving everyone knowing that whoever scored first would most likely leave with a victory.

Sporting KC had a couple of marvelous scoring opportunities early, including Diego Rubio hitting the base of the post on a 10th-minute penalty kick.

However, Stefan Marinovic was fantastic in goal for the Whitecaps, making a handful of key saves.

The game ended with some ugly play in stoppage time that saw two red cards handed out to both teams.

With the victory Vancouver now has a three point lead atop the Western Conference.
