It’s good news for Vancouver’s nightlife scene. The City of Vancouver announced Wednesday they are updating the municipal Liquor Policy to include more patio seating, extended hours and having live music go on later at night for the Granville Street Entertainment District.
The series of new bylaws aim to support local businesses and boost nightlife.

A breakdown of the new Granville Street liquor policy is as follows:
- Reduced regulatory constraints mean that more liquor establishments are able to apply for licensed outdoor patios.
- Local arts and culture venues have the opportunity to gain a new liquor business license allowing them to serve alcohol during regular hours and up until 11pm.
- Establishments are able to have live music later, until 1am.
- Venues will have to provide patrons with more information when making their drink selection by publishing drink sizes and strengths on their menus.
Along with these changes, a “Nightlife Council” is set to be established to ensure Granville Street is a safe place to go at night.
“I’m grateful that Council took action to modernize our Liquor Policy and make the Granville Entertainment District safer and more diverse, with more patios and live music later into the night, ” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “I’m optimistic that creating a Nightlife Council, supporting the Good Night Out program and boosting nighttime arts and culture will make the GED and the whole city safer and more vibrant.”
The changes will also allow there to be more choice for consumers on where to go, be able to stay out later and help to further diversify the area.
