It’s been a fairly disappointing hockey season thus far. After the Canucks’ record-breaking comeback goals, our hope for their season quietly fizzled out into what Vancouverites hate to expect.

But let’s not linger on the negatives here. Excitingly, Vancouver will be getting a new hockey team to root for.

VANCOUVER’S NEW HOCKEY TEAM

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is expanding into the West Coast, and one team will be calling Vancouver their home base. The league currently comprises six teams and is finishing up their second season. The teams are all located in the east, namely in Toronto, Ottawa, Boston, Montreal, and New York. Additionally, there is one in St. Paul, Minnesota in the U.S. northeast.

The PWHL has been looking to expand into different markets, and so reaching into the West Coast seemed the most optimal decision. Luckily, Vancouver has a fantastically growing market for girl’s hockey. Having a professional women’s hockey team in the city will be just the thing to encourage these young girls to keep at it.

Although the Vancouver team is not yet named (known temporarily as “PWHL Vancouver”), we do know that the team will be based in an upgraded Pacific Coliseum with their season starting in 2025-26. They will be the seventh team to join the PWHL, with rumours of a possible eighth team joining, as well. Speculation points toward Seattle, but the PWHL has yet to comment on that.

This is a developing story, so further details will be released as we learn more about this mysterious new team. Either way, get hyped and get excited, because we’ve got a new hockey team to cheer for!
