Another win for Hollywood North, and more importantly, another win for a Vancouver filmed production.
Deadpool has broken box office records with an estimated $135 million within its first four days, making it the first R-rated movie to ever shatter the $100 million mark during an opening weekend.
The Ryan Reynolds lead film has already earned back it’s $58 million production budget, and has doubled initial predictions of $65 million. The movie has also earned the biggest February opening weekend in history, beating out Fifty Shades of Grey (another Vancouver filmed production) which made $93 million over four days in 2015.
It reportedly took Reynolds years to convince studios that an R-rated superhero movie would be successful, and given Deadpool’s success, it’s fair to say the Vancouver actor was more than right.
Related superhero movies Deadpool has already topped:
- Man of Steel ($116.6 millon)
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million)
- Guardians of the Galaxy ($94.3 million)
While it is yet to be made official, directors have already hinted at a Deadpool sequel.
