The much-anticipated Vancouver House building has it’s anchor tenant: University Canada West.

The university, which specializes in business, as well as business management, programs, announced the news this Tuesday.

“This is an extremely important announcement for the evolution of University Canada West. We’ve secured a prime downtown location in one of the world’s most livable cities”, said UCW President Brock Dykeman.

Vancouver House, a skyscraper designed by Bjarke Ingels and developed by Westbank, has been drawing a lot of buzz for its unique shape.

As described by Westbank: “A slender base forms the nine-storey podium, ultimately widening into the 515-foot residential tower as it rises to meet the sky.”

Vancouver House will become the fourth-tallest skyscraper in Vancouver. In addition, in 2015, the building won the Future Building of the Year award at the World Architecture Festival.

University Canada West is expected to take up approximately 90,000 square-feet, spread across two 6-storey podium buildings. In total, Vancouver House consists of approximately 600,000 square-feet of space.

Some parts of the space the university will take up is still under construction, but here are some of the renderings:

The campus is expected to accommodate upwards of 3,400 students. Furthermore, the existing West Pender campus will also remain as is.

Once construction is complete, a London Drugs and Fresh Street Market are expected to be tenants in the district.

Westbank was also a partner in a new “Spinning Chandelier” art installation beneath the Granville Street Bridge, set to be officially unveiled this month. They’re also the developer of the equally-unique Japanese lantern-inspired building on W Georgia Street, whose anchor tenant will be Apple.
