Have you ever walked into a supplement store and felt overwhelmed? From the jacked-up guy behind the counter to the rows of products you’ve never heard of before, the experience can be intimidating.
Fortunately, not all supplement stores are the same. But still, how do you know what supplements are right for you?
For starters, it’s important to know the role supplements play in our lives. Whether you’re a newbie to the gym or an established athlete, it’s vital to get your nutrients from food, but sometimes we need more for specific goals and that’s where supplements come in.
As with anything, it’s great to learn from professionals so we went shopping with Harpreet Pandher at Supplement King Surrey to uncover what products she likes to use to fuel her workouts and recovery.
Among other things, Harpreet is a competitive bodybuilder who has racked up first-place trophies at numerous national and international shows. In addition, she’s also a Registered Psychiatric Nurse. With knowledge in both health and fitness, she uses her skills to promote healthy lifestyles.
Harpreet Pandher’s Favourite Supplements
Supplement of choice: Amino Reload
Why: I like it because it’s not just BCAAs, it has EAAs which are essential amino acids your body doesn’t naturally make so you have to get them from other resources. EAAs help protein-synthesis which helps build muscle. A lot of similar products only offer BCAAs which prevent breaking down muscle, but don’t aid with building it. This is my go to – I swear by this.
Supplement of choice: Hydropure
Why: I take my protein before and after my workouts. This is an isolate so it’s easy to digest and doesn’t leave me bloated. It’s made with stevia, so it’s all natural and clean. I use it all through my preps leading up to the day before my show. It’s easy to mix too, so I put it in my oatmeal, cream of rice, pretty much anything I can mix protein into. It’s also great for smoothies.
Supplement of choice: C4
Why: I’m not big on pre-workout, but if I do take it I like C4. I find it tastes good, it doesn’t give me a crash and provides sustained energy to get me through my workouts.
Product of choice: Flavour God
Why: I like this because it lasts forever and it’s great for any kind of cooking. You only need to sprinkle a little bit onto anything and it makes your food taste a lot better. If I’m making turkey, I might use Italian Zest. If I’m making beef I like the Taco flavour. It’s low in sodium but rich in flavour.
Product of choice: Drip Fit with the waistband
Why: It’s an intensifier so you use it before you do cardio. You can put it wherever you want. I put it on my mid-section, but you can place it behind your thighs, under your arms or anywhere that’s thermogenic and it’s going to get you sweating. Once you’ve applied it, you put a sweat belt over top and you’ll notice you’re drenched by your workout.
It’s great to use where you might have water retention, or when you’re getting ready for a vacation to reduce bloated areas. I usually start my workouts by hitting the weights and then put this on with the belt and do cardio. I also like it because it’s natural and local. It also smells really good, my favourite is the Lemon flavour.
