After a year of phenomenal astral displays, Metro Vancouver will welcome the first day of 2018 with a huge, extremely luminescent supermoon.
Vancouverites were privy to a number of incredible occurrences this year, including the total solar eclipse back in August. There was also a supermoon on Sunday, December 3rd, and the year’s most spectacular meteor shower throughout the past month.
Supermoon on New Year’s Day
Now, this celestial event will be particularly awe-inspiring because of the moon’s proximity to the city. Indeed, supermoons appear roughly 14% bigger and 30% brighter than typical full moons. The moon won’t doesn’t actually change during this event, but it will be a lot closer to earth. Specially, NASA describes the occurrence as a new or full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.
Those looking to catch the luminescent display in all its glory should travel as far outside of the city’s light pollution as possible. In addition, they should aim to sit on higher elevations to get the optimum viewing perspective.
