Are you looking for a sun-filled getaway without having to leave the country? Why not head to Savary Island instead, where you can find a tropical oasis right here in BC!

It’s a remote island in the Straight of Georgia, dubbed the ‘Hawaii of the North.’ Located on the Sunshine Coast, its to the 144 kilometres northwest of Vancouver and about six kilometres from Lund.

With the warmest waters north of Mexico and white, sandy beaches, it’s hard to believe this slice of paradise exists so close to home.

The dreamy, crescent shaped island is about 7.5 kilometres long and approximately one kilometre wide.

The landscape is covered with a variety of forests, meadows, and sand cliffs & dunes. It also holds a highly sensitive ecosystem, which is considered quite fragile.

A variety of wildlife can be found on the island – bald eagles, sea otters, hummingbirds, and many more.

You can take your pick of beaches: South Beach, Indian Point, South Side Bluffs, Mermaid Rock, Duck Bay. They’re a mix of white, sink-your-toes-in beaches and rocky west coast shores, but both carry their own beauty.

What You Should Know

While not accessible by ferry, there are water taxis available from Lund. It’s also accessible by floatplane, barge or boat.

You can do a day trip or stay overnight; however, there is only one campsite on the island. An Island Resort and vacation rentals are also available. It is an off-grid, remote island, so there is no electricity.

The best way to get around is by bike. Rentals are available on the island. All the roads are unpaved, so make sure you drive carefully!
