It’s been just over four years since Vancouver hosted the Winter 2010 Olympics. It’s also been just over four years since the Olympic Greek Goddess of victory Nike, a 900 kilogram statue that stands four metres tall has been sitting in Vancouver.
It’s an Olympic tradition, every city who hosts the Olympics receives the Greek Goddess from Ancient Olympia. Vancouver received the statue just before the Winter Olympics but never put it up, why? it was unexpected and we had no room, well at least at the time because the city was still scrambling around to have everything else ready for the games.
The city did attempt to place the statue at Queen Elizabeth Park and Jack Poole Plaza, but failed due to the statue being too heavy for Q.E park and too close to the Olympic Cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza (they wanted to space out Olympic related landmarks) Instead of rushing the procedure, the city took a step back and decided to wait and find the perfect site to install it.
The Greek Goddess, which has been sitting in the Vancouver city works yard for four years has finally “spread its wings” on the median on Cordova and Thurlow street.
