Stargazers are privy to a number of phenomenal nocturnal displays in Metro Vancouver. In fact, there were a litany of fabulous occurrences in 2017 alone.
From the dazzlingly bright meteor shower in December to the total solar eclipse in August, the city witnessed a multitude of remarkable events. With that being said, there’s something particularly special about observing one of nature’s most colourful exhibits, the northern lights.

Indeed, these painted manifestations are truly breathtaking. Whenever they occur within the lower mainland people are quick to post images of the splendorous scene.
With this in mind, Vancouver is not the most optimal place to view aurora borealis in Canada, or even within the province. Luckily, one of the best spots to see this astral splash is only a brief flight from the city.
Northern Lights in Whitehorse, Yukon

Whitehorse is one of the best places to experience Northern Canada and take in the magnificence of the Northern Lights. As the capital and largest city in the Yukon, it’s a great place to experience some of the most incredible activities in Northern Canada.
From dog-sledding to ice-fishing, hot-springs to wildlife watching, there are a plethora of fabulous things to enjoy up north. What’s more, the city has some of the most experienced and passionate guides in the country to take you on your subzero journey.
Most importantly, this lovely city affords some of the most spectacular aurora viewing. Air Canada sells direct flights between the two cities for just over $300 CAD return including taxes and fees. In addition, the total flight time is roughly 2 hours, making the experience very hassle-free.
The viewing lodges are excellent places to see the lights, and this northern city gets much darker than its southern counterparts. While they are not easy to spot each night of winter, the nights are darker around new moons and therefore seem to be better for their observation.
