Just days after 300,000+ Vancouverites paraded along Commercial Drive for Italian Day, the Vancouver city council has voted to adopt the ‘Little Italy’ moniker for the heart of Vancouver’s Italian community.
The motion was put forward by Councillor Melissa De Genova, with all Councillors in the meeting unanimously voting in favor.
While the exact location of ‘Little Italy’ along The Drive has yet to be decided, the official recognition is expected to provide pride to local Italians and attract more tourists to the area which will ultimately benefit the local businesses.
Although The Drive has changed quite a bit over time, it still holds strong Italian heritage and a large portion of Vancouver’s Italian businesses and shops.
