Hundreds gathered at Holland Park on Friday night to honour the life of 19-year-old Maple Batalia, who was gunned down earlier this week.
Batalia was found shot to death near her car in a parkade on the SFU Surrey campus on Wednesday morning.
Michelle Cyr, Batalia’s friend, said that the slaying has brought the community together.
“She touched so many people and I think just by coming out here, you know, we’re really showing that we as a community want to make sure we prevent things like this from ever happening again,” Cyr said.
Hours before the vigil began, shots were fired nearby at 132nd Street and Old Yale Road. Police said they found shell casings at the scene but no one was injured.
Batalia’s parents believe she was having problems with her ex- boyfriend but police have not named any suspects in the case. Police say they’re still searching for Batalia’s killer.
