Get Acquainted with A Local Musician; Josh Lethbridge

On Saturday November 1, 2014, Josh Lethbridge, 21, who plays under the name JVR,  took to the stage at Joe’s Apartment on Granville street. Taking to the stage by himself, the Maple Ridge native held his own. He played music that he wrote as well as covers from other bands.

Lethbridge played the guitar while singing, filling the venue with a Nirvana and Kurt Cobain feel. His voice was memorizing and the audience were drawn in by the sound. During the set, a guitar string broke, however, this did not stop the singer. He cracked some jokes and continued on with a cover of ‘Black Hole Sun’ originally by Soundgarden.

After the set 604 Now was able to talk with the artist about his experience with Vancouver venues and what we can expect next.

How long have you been interested in music? How long have you been actively pursuing your career in this field?

I have to say that I have been interested in music since I was a child, I used to play the drums with headphones on listening to Jimi Hendrix records. Other than writing songs for fun when I first started playing guitar and trying to sing, I had started a band with high school friends and started playing small shows once in a while. The bigger shows came along once we were all old enough to play in bars, so if I had to say how long I have been pursuing, I would say about three years

Where do you want to be in the next five years?

Within the next five years, I would love to be able to release a couple albums and maybe see the world a little bit. If I can make a comfortable living doing my passion than I couldn’t ask for much more on this planet, but my ultimate goal is to leave behind the biggest possible positive impact on as many people as I can before I’m gone, and If I can do that with my music then I’ll do everything I can to make that happen.

You write your own songs, where do you get your inspiration?

I believe I gain inspiration from everything on earth, really. When I write a song, it usually starts with the tune, and then whatever flows from my soul emotionally and lyrically just comes to me from somewhere. Its almost more of a majestic experience for me rather than trying to make a song using musical and poetic theory.

If you are having a mental block, where in Vancouver do you go to unwind?

If I’m having a mental block while writing, I usually like to go for a drive with my guitar and writing book, I don’t have a destination most of the time, usually anywhere peaceful and away from worldly distractions. If that doesn’t work, Ill move on to a different song until I feel inspired for the previous song.

Each time you take to the stage what is the atmosphere like for you? What is your thought process before the show?

Well, to be honest I’m usually very nervous before any show for about a week leading up to the last ten minutes before my set. My mental process is usually along the lines of  “Don’t mess this up, do your best to give the proper message to the audience, and have fun doing it.”

You’ve played at Joe’s Apartment before, how many times have you played this venue and how did it start?

I think I have played at Joes Apartment at least five times now, I played there first with my previous band “feller”. I have stayed in contact with the production company in Vancouver called “Rednyne Productions” they are pretty reasonable and friendly to musicians. I usually get shows from them at a multitude of different venues in Vancouver such as “The Media Club”, “The Roxy”, “The Cellar” and a few others as well.

You used to be in a band, why have you decided to go solo?

Now thats a good question, at the time there were a multitude of different reasons why I decided to go solo, but mainly I feel like I wanted to branch out and express different sounds into the mix. I do miss playing with those guys sometimes, but I feel like it was more of a hobby than a lifestyle with the band I used to play in and theres nothing wrong with that, but I wanted to expand more as an artist and not confine the art into a specific genre.

What can we expect next from you?

I have a couple of things on the go for the next little while with my music, I’ve recently put out a single titled “Leopard Print Dress” and am working on writing new material and saving up to record a full length album including the song featured on the single.

Where can people find your music?

My music can be found on a soundcloud page that I will be adding to in the next few weeks. I also have hard copies of my single for sale at $5 each. I’m also going to start uploading to YouTube soon as well!

What is your favourite place to play in Vancouver?

Its hard to say really, there’s a couple of places that come to my mind when I read that question. I like Joes Apartment for the sound quality, I really like The Media Club for the atmosphere but the very first Vancouver show I ever played was at this small place called “The Backstage Lounge” on Granville Island and I love the chilled out atmosphere there as well as the sentimental value to me.

Where would you like to play in Vancouver and why?

There are many places in Vancouver I would love to play on a larger scale like “The Commodore Ballroom”, “Queen Elizabeth Theatre”, “The Vogue Theatre” etc. Some day If I could fill “Rogers Arena” I can’t even begin to describe the feeling I would have from that experience. I guess because I would be able to laugh about all the worrying I do sometimes and I would feel a weight lifted off my shoulders in a sense.

Before or after a show in Vancouver, where is your go to place to grab some food?

I usually will end up going to the nearest “by the slice” pizza shop but mainly whatever is cheap, fast and decent tasting.
